J. R. Bruce Cassie, Ph.D

About

At the heart of Psychotherapy and The Baker’s Dozen lies more than research—it carries the story of a lifetime devoted to helping others grow. Dr. J. R. Bruce Cassie began his journey as a teacher and counsellor before earning his Ph.D. in Applied Psychology. For twenty-nine years, he served as professor at the University of Toronto’s Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, shaping future counsellors and advancing the field of psychotherapy. His awards and recognitions speak to his leadership, yet his true achievement rests in his commitment to people.

Through years of teaching and practice, he noticed what many preferred not to see: clients often leave therapy still struggling. This realization shaped both his late-career research and his writing. With compassion and courage, he asked why—and he dared to answer. His book brings forward an honest conversation, not to diminish psychotherapy but to strengthen it. He offers a clear, common-sense approach through the “Baker’s Dozen”—thirteen essential aspects of daily life that influence mental health more deeply than most realize.

Behind the professional stands the man. Raised in a lively family of seven children, Bruce knew early on the importance of resilience, humor, and connection. With his wife, a dedicated teacher, he raised two children who carried the family tradition of excellence into medicine and psychology. Today, from his home in Ontario’s cottage country, he continues to share his vision.

Our story, then, is not only about a book. It is about a professor, a counsellor, a father, and a thinker who refused to look away from hard truths. It is about giving clients a better way forward, with dignity, preparation, and hope.
